Best Ways to Stay Healthy and Fit Throughout Pregnancy

Staying healthy while pregnant is extremely important because you are now responsible for another human life. If you take good care of your body while you are pregnant, you will be doing your part to help ensure your baby will be in good health. Here are some of the ways I am stayed healthy while pregnant!

Eat a Nutritious Diet
Eating a nutritious diet is one of the most important things you can do while you are pregnant. Many women think being pregnant gives them an excuse to eat junk food all day, but that is not healthy at all. Although you should eat about 300 extra calories a day, the calories should not come from unhealthy foods. Instead of eating pizza and cupcakes, you should fill your diet with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy products. You should avoid eating foods that are uncooked including smoked seafood like salmon and whitefish.

Take Your Vitamins
If you want to make sure your baby gets all the nutrients he needs, you should take a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement each day. Take your vitamins at the same time each day so that you remember to take them.

Exercise Regularly
Being pregnant does not mean you can’t exercise anymore. In fact, it is very healthy for women to exercise regularly. Working out will not just help prevent excess weight gain; it will also boost your mood and decrease pain and discomfort. Opt for low-impact activities like yoga, cycling, swimming and walking. Take a break if you feel tired and make sure to drink plenty of water during your workouts.

Limit Caffeine Intake
When you are pregnant, you should limit your intake of coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks. These drinks contain caffeine, which can increase your risk of having a miscarriage or low-birth-weight baby. Try to drink more water and decaffeinated teas instead.

Get Plenty of Rest
It is very important for pregnant women to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. Getting proper rest will keep your body healthy for your baby. If it feels uncomfortable to sleep, try placing a pillow under your belly.

If you follow these helpful tips, you should be able to stay healthy throughout your pregnancy.  As always, double-check with your doctor before making any decisions about your pregnancy.  I was fortunate to have a doctor who gave me tons of advice.  From the value of banking my child’s cord blood to how to swaddle a baby properly!  Enjoy this time with your little one- the healthy way!

  1. I agree that it is very important to eat healthy and exercise during pregnancy. So many people eat a ton thinking they are eating for two and then gain more weight than is healthy. Since I had gestational diabetes with my kids I had to be very careful with my diet!
