A Typical Summer Weekend

Life with three children is never easy. There is always so much to do and see, especially for a blended family like ours. We are usually a family of three but every other weekend and for a month in the summer, we are a family of five. When we are all together, we jam-pack our days full of activities. We like to stay active, especially in the summer. Over the years, I have learned that I need help and to pack the essentials in order to make it through the day. I'm a pro at handling three or more kids now. Since I love to share our lives with you, here's a glimpse into a typical weekend looks like for us.

JC and I both work full-time outside the home so for us, the weekend starts at 5pm on Fridays. I leave work first and pick up Adrian from camp. Then I pick up JC and then we all go to pick up Amberly and Gian. Usually, after we pick them up, we go have dinner together. Fridays are the hardest day because it takes the kids (and us!) a little bit to get accustomed to being around each other again. There is lots of bickering on Fridays so we usually call it an early night!

Saturdays mornings are hard! We have to get up early, have breakfast, pick up Ivanna and be at the soccer fields by 9am! Soccer practice is over by 10:30 am.

Then we spend the rest of the day playing at the park. I pack a cooler (Friday night!) with sandwiches, fruit, juice, water and other goodies to keep everyone fed and hydrated throughout the day. We keep a sports bag in the trunk of our car with all types of sports balls, soccer goals, kites, skates and scooters for Saturdays at the park!

In my purse, I pack the essentials for park days with three kids: plenty of bandages and Neosporin! There hasn't been a park day that hasn't involved some sort of cut or scrape yet.

After the park, we will go home, take showers and then I will venture out to the grocery store for sustenance. This particular evening, everyone decided to come with and at one point, I looked over and Adrian was inside the ball display. Gian was running around the store and Amberly was adamant about buying 4 packages of bacon.

After our grocery store adventures, we came home, I made dinner (fettucine alfredo), everyone changed into pj's and it was time to relax. Relaxing in our home means video games! At around 10pm, I make everyone get upstairs and go to bed.

I'm a dreamer. In a perfect world, I get to sleep in on Sundays and then lounge around the house all day. In the real world, Gian is in our room by 7am, the latest, insisting that he needs to read us the latest installment in the Captain Underpants series.

By 9am, the other two kids are out of bed and downstairs watching TV. JC and I are in the kitchen making Sunday breakfast: eggs, bacon and pancakes. When we are done, I send everyone upstairs to change into swimsuits, I pack another cooler of goodies, apply sunscreen and off to the beach we go!

We spend all day at the beach. We swim, play games, ride scooters, have lunch and take naps. All day!! I do get to relax at the beach. It's my spot!! When we gt back home, it's showers for everyone and as they are done, they go downstairs and play games on their tablets. Since it's summer, sometimes Amberly and Gian will stay over until Monday or they will go back home around 9pm. While they play on their tablets, I'm getting everything sorted for the week: laundry, ironing, blog posts.

Our weekends are pretty routine. We like to be outside with the kids during the day. We like parks, beaches, pools and water parks. We have beautiful weather here in Miami and we enjoy it as much as we can. I do have a couple essentials that I stock up on at the beginning of summer to get us through the season.

Sunscreen is a must. We apply it every day and reapply throughout the day. Applying sunscreen is second nature to us. I carry Neosporin and bandages in my purse and I keep some in the car. I also keep some children's Benadryl handy. Adrian is allergic to bug bites and this helps calm down the itching. He will get bit no matter how much bug repellent I apply! Poor kid! I purchase all my Johnson & Johnson Healthy Essentials at Walgreens. They even stock it all together in one display so I can just grab-n-go!

Did you know that Walgreens has an app? Well they do and it rocks. You can keep your Balance® Rewards card info on it, save coupons and prescriptions. Also, if you select the BR for healthy choices option, you can earn Balance® Rewards points for doing everyday healthy activities like walking, running and cycling. You'll get 20 points any time you record an activity, 250 points when you set your first goal and 250 points when you connect an app or device. All those points add up quickly and help you save on future purchases at Walgreens!

What essentials do you stock up on for summer? Are your days as active as ours?

  1. Wow, I don't know how you do it all, but your family is really active! I wish we lived near a beach so we could go enjoy it on the weekends. #client
