I'm Joining The PTA!

Yes you read the title correctly, I'm joining the PTA at my son's school. Why you ask? Why not! I volunteered as a classroom mom last year when he was in Kindergarten and I loved it. I figure let's sign up and join the organization that works together to improve the school. I love helping out and I look forward to forming relationships with school staff. Do I look forward to the drama and cliques? NOPE! Hey, I guess you have to take the good with the bad. So, last night I completed my application, wrote my check and I will drop it off tonight at Open House.

Of course, I will continue to blog about my PTA experience. Are you a member of the PTA at your's child's school? Any tips?

Oh and have you voted for me yet as a Top 25 Southern Mom Blog? Please do!

A Childhood Must

We had a very relaxing weekend. We stayed home on Saturday and most of the day Sunday, just hanging out. We did have a super important moment this weekend: Adrian finally caught a lizard! This was the moment of all moments for him. He had been trying and trying to catch lizards for the past year and was not successful until Saturday. The dogs spotted the lizard inside the house and he slowly approached it and waited, waited until he quickly grabbed its tail and caught a lizard.

To me, whether they freak you out or you are fascinated by them, catching a lizard is a childhood must. I used to catch them and clip them to my earlobe like earrings. I was so happy for Adrian on Saturday, of course after catching just one, now he thinks he's an expert! I'm glad I have a picture as proof, I'm not sure when he will catch another.

Also, quick favor, can you please vote for my blog (currently #10) as a Circle of Moms Top 25 Southern Mom blog? Thanks!

Worst Decision Ever!

Ben Affleck as Batman? Yes I'm sure you have read about this all over the internet. My opinion? EPIC FAIL! I am a Batman fan and have loved most of the comic book movies but this is seriously the worst decision ever. Ben Affleck is an amazing director and a good actor but he is not Batman! Don't casting directors remember Daredevil?

I'm not the only upset fan here. Follow #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck on Twitter. People are losing their minds over this decision. There is even a petition to bring back Christian Bale at The Petition Site. In my opinion, any of these actors could have been cast as Batman:

1. Michael Fassbender (my pick!)
2.Richard Armitage
3. Luke Evans
4. Ryan Gosling
5. Andrew Lincoln

Any opinions on this? Do you even care?

Review: NETGEAR N600 Router & Norton Anti-Virus Software

DISCLOSURE: This is a sponsored post. I received these products from Staples in exchange for writing this review. Although sponsored, all opinions are my own.

OK, anyone who knows me knows that I know very little about computers and technology. I don't understand the terminology and get lost when I am asked to work with a new product. So when I received a request from Staples to review the NETGEAR N600 Router and Norton Anti-virus software, I panicked. First, what is a router? (I wasn't kidding when I mentioned that I was technology-challenged!) Am I going to know how to explain it? I consulted with my trusted tech geek, JC and he told me that this was the perfect opportunity to put on my big girl panties and learn. So, I agreed to do the review, start learning and GET IT TOGETHER!!! So here we go, this is not a super technical review, this is a review from a mom who is learning and slowly understanding.

Here's what I received:

The router we had installed was one provided by the cable company. According to the everyone who lives/visits the house, our Wi-Fi sucked! When this new one arrived, you would think it was Christmas at our house. My brother and JC wanted it installed right away. I was worried that we couldn't switch the routers (I called the cable company to make sure it was OK, it was!) My brother and JC pulled out their new toy from the box, disconnected the previous router and connected the new one, opened a browser and BAM! The built-in NETGEAR Genie took over and within 2 minutes everything was running perfectly...just like that! I didn't have time to take pics of the installation (6 super easy steps by the way on the Installation Guide, basically plugin cables, turning on router/modem, and opening a browser). They obviously do not understand the need bloggers have to take pictures of EVERYTHING!

Our Wi-Fi now is AMAZING!! Here is a comparison of my brother's iPhone Wi-Fi before and after (standing right in front of the router...):

Oh and it reaches out by the pool which is 130 ft (40 m) from the router:

I also learned that since this is a dual band router, my brother and JC can play their Xbox/Playstation on one band and leave the other band open for the phones/any other device requiring Wi-Fi! Yay! No more complaining!

Here are some other fun facts:

  • The NETGEAR N600 Router is equipped with READYSHARE which provides fast and easy shared access to an external USB storage device.
  • It has a broadband usage meter that ensures accurate measurement of internet daily, weekly and monthly traffic with customized alerts.
  • Simultaneous dual band Wireless-N offers twice the bandwidth with better connection and less interference.
  • Live Parental Controls, powered by OpenDNS
  • Lifetime Warranty

The Norton Anti-virus software was SO EASY to install. I ran the scan and our computer was clean. I didn't need any tech-help with this part of the review. This software is available for PC or MAC. After you install and scan, it continues protecting your computer from all those nasty viruses. It also protects your privacy and prevents your passwords and identity from being stolen while you surf the Web. The best part: It scans and updates when you are not using the computer so it doesn't slow you down or get in the way.

Do you have either of these products? What do you think about them?

Back to School!

Yesterday was back to school time here in South Florida! Yay!!!! The kids weren't as excited as I was. They did cooperate for pictures though, it was a miracle! I printed First Day of School Printables from Kristi (thank u!!!), pulled out the camera and was ready to go!

I took Adrian to his school and JC took Amberly and Gian to their school. Adrian and Amberly were pros at their schools but Gian was nervous since he was starting at a new school. They all ended up having a wonderful first day in Kindergarten, First and Second grade!

My dear friends, please take a minute to vote for me for Top 25 Southern Mom Blogs:

Review: PowerMyLearning

Disclosure: I participated in this campaign for the Sverve Network. I received compensation for my review of this product  However, I only review products that are fitting for my family. All opinions stated are my own.

We're getting there, inching ever so slowly to Back to School. Here in South Florida, kids start school on August 19th. I am very excited to get the kids back on schedule and back to hanging out with their friends. The one thing I am not worrying about this year is wondering if they have forgotten everything they learned the previous school year. This summer, along with workbooks and flash cards, all three kids have been using an amazing learning website, PowerMyLearning.org.

PowerMyLearning.org is a free (Yes! You read that correctly FREE!) web-based platform designed for K-12 students, parents and educators. PowerMyLearning.org makes thousands of the most compelling publicly available digital learning activities from across the web easily accessible and usable, creating an unbiased, go-to destination.

It's easy and free to create an account. I created a parent account and then linked the three kids accounts to mine. Each child can go to their individual account, play their games, then I can go in and check their progress. Really easy. They have activities for K-12 students in the following subjects: Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Art & Music, Technology and World Languages. I like that the activities are aligned to Common Core Standards, which are being integrated into the Florida School System Curriculum. The kids tried out Math first. For Adrian, since he is starting first grade, I went to the Math, then first grade tab, then down to Measurement & Data. I checked the boxes where I wanted to improve skills and it matches to the appropriate activities:

It matches lots of activities and I had him try out all of them. He enjoyed Bugs in the System the best.

Then, it was Amberly's turn. I went through the same process, but for second grade Math and her favorite was Math Magician. The game consists of solving as many equations as she could within 60 seconds.

She did pretty well on her first try:

Then it was Gian's turn. Same process, but for Kindergarten. He enjoyed Splat Square the most. Numbers are called out to him and he has to find the number on the board and splat it with paint. Super fun!

Educators can use the free activities and tools to create personalized learning experiences to help their students meet the Common Core Standards.

This website has been an amazing tool for our family. The kids enjoy playing the games and I know that they are learning and getting ready for school. I will definitely be continuing to use this website to supplement what they learn at school.

Check out the website here: PowerMyLearning.Org and let me know what you think and what games your kids are playing.
